Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
The Doctor of Optometry is responsible for providing comprehensive vision care to patients so they can care for their eyes and access tools to support their vision. Duties include conducting eye examinations, identifying signs of disease or injury, and prescribing corrective lenses.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform thorough routine eye inspections.
  • Perform pre- and post-operative checks.
  • Identify the patient’s visual acuity, field of vision, and hand-eye coordination.
  • Diagnose sight problems, such as nearsightedness and color blindness.
  • Prescribe corrective lenses and medications.
  • Refer patients with ocular pathology and/or surgical needs to ophthalmologists as indicated
  • Maintain accurate medical files for all patients.
  • Promote eye health by teaching patients about proper eye care techniques.
  • Identify and assess eye defects and diseases commensurate with skills and scope of practice.
  • Record all diagnosis and treatment plans, including referrals and therapeutic prescriptions.
  • Provide call coverage in rotation with all physicians
  • Perform some administrative duties as required

The incoming optometrist will have the opportunity to be mentored by seasoned surgeons who provide world-class care in their community. Our highly trained team of thirteen board certified ophthalmologists includes seven fellowship trained sub-specialists. Services and specialties include comprehensive eye care, cataracts, glaucoma, refractive procedures (iLASIK), corneal disorders, retinal disorders, pediatric vision disorders, oculo-facial plastics (functional and aesthetic services) and optical.

Providing service at four NC locations: Hickory, Lenoir, Boone, Lincolnton, and a 3 OR Surgery Center within its 92,000 square foot Hickory building, patients receive the ultimate in state-of -the-art ophthalmic services.

  • $120,000 – $160,000 base salary + Bonus

Candidate Description

The ideal candidate will have the following essential skills and abilities:

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • In-depth knowledge and skills of optometry essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to this position. Demonstrated ability to perform moderately complex optometric examinations including visual acuity, pupillary examination, confrontation visual fields, tonometry, evaluation of muscle balance, stereopsis, phorias, vergences, retinoscopy, slit lam examination, lensometry, indirect ophthalmoscopy, fundus photography and other relevant examination components.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform subjective refractions for ophthalmology patients.
  • Must possess skills to provide directions, instructions, information, and guidance to less experienced staff members.
  • Must be able to work in a highly collaborative manner with staff, physicians, and members of our healthcare community.
  • Customer service oriented with excellent analytical skills.

Candidate Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Doctor of optometry (O.D.) degree.
  • Must possess a North Carolina Optometry Board license
  • Completion of a one-year ACOE accredited residency program, preferably in ocular disease.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a practicing Optometrist.
